Solid flooring is when each board consists of one solid piece of hardwood. The most common thickness is ¾” and widths vary from two to five inches. These floors experience the normal expansion and contraction with changes in relative humidity. They are designed to be installed on or above grade (where humidity levels are more controllable). Therefore, solid flooring is not recommended in basement applications in order to avoid unnecessary problems due to excessive moisture.
These floors also require a solid plank or plywood sub-floor to enable the planks to be nailed down using a two inch cleat. A concrete sub-floor, such as in a condominium, would require that a ¾” plywood sub-floor be installed prior to solid wood installation.
There are many wood species available such as Red or White Oak, Maple, Birch, Ash, Cherry, Walnut, Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry), Cabreuva (Santos Mahogany), Hickory, Beech, and other exotic species. Combine all these woods with the various manufacturers, grades and the many colors and widths available, and you are provided with hundreds of flooring options. Solid ¾ inch floors have the possibility of being re-sanded three to five times for a real lifetime investment.
